Des Moines’ humble beginings started as a design precursor to the Oregon City Class as the Naval Board had designed a new gun which had a new Auto-Loading System.

  • The Oregons could not carry the weight as they were already considered top heavy. To mitigate this, a New Ship Class was designed.
  • This class would be called the Des Moines Class and 20 Years from then, the Auto Loading system would be crucial to the Soviet Union to make the revolutionizing Tank Gun Auto Loaders using the same principle. While the Des Moines was considered obselete, they still lived throughout much of the 20th Century from Cruising in the Mediterranean to the Gun Fire Support in Vietnam.
  • The Des Moines Real life RoF was 10 RPM. In game, it was to adjusted for balancing.
  • The Des Moines class during the Vietnam War provided gun support, due to this. they were considered in the fleet, as the last of the All-Gunned Cruisers as majority of the fleet, the USN had already converted to the new Guided Missile Doctrine.
  • Nonetheless during the 80's during President Reagan's Administration, the Des Moines class was considered to be put in the 600-Ship Navy Plan but due to the cost of reactivating this Class, their cost would have been that of reactivating the Iowa class ships.
  • In turn USS Des Moines and USS New Port News were scrapped but USS Salem was donated.
